At the heart of the Nyiragongo territory, a crucial question haunts the region: securing IDP sites. This major issue is currently mobilizing security sector actors and community leaders in a process of reflection and consultation. Initiated by MONUSCO/Goma, this meeting aims to provide concrete responses to guarantee the protection of war-displaced persons, while promoting peaceful coexistence between them and indigenous populations.
A preliminary analysis highlighted the main sources of insecurity plaguing the region, including conflicts over land ownership and the uncontrolled circulation of weapons to IDP sites. These factors fuel a climate of uncertainty and fear among residents, exacerbating tensions and further weakening internally displaced persons.
Faced with this worrying reality, it is imperative to reassure local populations about the preservation of the land hosting the displaced, in order to prevent any risk of dispossession. Similarly, it is essential to obtain the commitment of the authorities of the defense and security forces, as well as members of the community, in the strict regulation of the circulation of weapons. This comprehensive approach to community security aims to mobilize all the actors involved, thus promoting close collaboration and effective coordination to prevent criminal acts and protect vulnerable populations.
Colonel Mungu Akonkwa Mokili, an expert in security governance, emphasizes the importance of frank and transparent collaboration between security beneficiaries and the actors concerned. This inclusive approach promotes the exchange of information, the cross-referencing of data and the implementation of concrete solutions to strengthen the security of displaced persons sites. Ultimately, it is about building a safe and peaceful environment, where each individual can find refuge and protection, far from the threats and violence that have marked their history.
Through this collective and participatory approach, the inhabitants of the Nyiragongo territory demonstrate a common desire to build a better future, based on solidarity, mutual respect and lasting peace. By joining forces and knowledge, they work together to build a world where the security and dignity of all are inalienable values, guaranteed by solid cooperation and unwavering civic commitment.
