Optimizing community health around Lake Tanganyika: an exemplary project in action

Fatshimetrie and the ISSU organization are joining forces to improve the primary health of populations living around Lake Tanganyika. The project aims to raise awareness, educate and strengthen the capacities of families in the prevention of waterborne diseases. Through the construction of wells, public toilets, and the development of delivery rooms, the project contributes to a significant improvement in living conditions in the targeted villages. This initiative demonstrates a proactive and sustainable commitment to community health, thus combating health inequalities and placing the needs of the populations at the heart of the actions undertaken.
Fatshimetrie, in collaboration with the ISSU organization supported by the Danish Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs, has launched the third phase of a community-based primary health care project called “Mradi wa Afya Ziwa Tanganyika”, translated as “Lake Tanganyika Health Project”. This initiative aims to improve the primary health of the population in the health zones of the province, with a focus on 12 villages spread between the territories of Moba and Kalemie.

Reverend Jacques Bia Unda, legal representative of the Moravian Church Congo East, explains that the main objective is to raise awareness among communities, provide mass education and build the capacity of families in the prevention of waterborne diseases, particularly the recurring epidemics along Lake Tanganyika. It is also about promoting a safe and healthy coastal environment, free from risks of contamination.

Over the course of the first two phases of the project, tangible actions have been carried out. In particular, wells have been dug in several villages, public toilets have been built along the lake, delivery rooms have been set up to improve maternal and child health, and motorized ambulances have been set up to facilitate the evacuation of pregnant women to suitable health centers.

The commitment of Fatshimetrie and its partners to community health in this crucial region demonstrates a proactive and sustainable approach. By raising awareness, educating and taking concrete action to strengthen the local health system, the Lake Tanganyika Health Project contributes significantly to improving the living conditions of the inhabitants of these remote areas.

This initiative is part of a process of solidarity development and the fight against health inequalities, placing the needs of the populations at the heart of the actions undertaken. By joining forces and expertise, Fatshimetrie, the Moravian Church of East Congo and the ISSU organization provide a concrete response to the public health challenges faced by the inhabitants of the villages bordering Lake Tanganyika.
