The crucial question of constitutional revision in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The issue of revising or changing the constitution in the Democratic Republic of Congo raises political issues of great importance, highlighting different visions within the Congolese political class. Indeed, Senator Jean Tshisekedi, a member of the UDPS, has shown his support for this project, arguing that adapting the fundamental law to the current realities of the country is essential for its socio-political development.

According to him, it is imperative to bring the DRC out of the shadow of foreign influences and to get rid of elements that are contrary to national emergence that could be contained in the current constitution. He therefore calls for in-depth reflection, including the participation of civil society, political actors and experts in constitutional law, in order to fully understand the issues and implications of such a reform.

This process of constitutional revision should not be considered as a simple political whim, but as a fundamental necessity for the democratic evolution and autonomy of the country. In this regard, the creation of a technical and multidisciplinary commission to study and formulate recommendations on the constitutional review is a crucial step in this process.

However, within the Congolese opposition, this initiative is viewed with suspicion, with some seeing it as a maneuver aimed at extending the presidential mandate of Félix Tshisekedi. Leading opposition figures such as Martin Fayulu and Moïse Katumbi expressed their opposition to this project at a recent meeting in Belgium, seeking to form a coalition against any controversial constitutional reform.

This divergence of views illustrates the complexity of the Congolese political scene and underlines the importance of a constructive and open debate on the constitutional future of the country. It is essential that political actors, civil society and citizens engage in an inclusive and transparent dialogue to ensure a constitutional reform that truly serves the Congolese people and the democratic future of the country.
