In the current conflict of the quarry called Maboko Musolo, nestled a few kilometers from the Wanga trading center, the inhabitants of this region were once again shaken by a terrible tragedy that occurred on Saturday, December 7. Four young people were killed, buried under the earth, while three others survived but were seriously injured.
Reports are pouring in and point to the non-compliance with mining regulations as the main reason for this tragedy. It should be noted that all the victims were nationals of the locality of Wanga, located some 40 kilometers from the site of the accident.
The Gombari sector chief, Jean Paulin Kombomaro Banda, did not hide his emotion at this tragic event. He clearly expressed his condolences to the grieving families and relatives of the missing. He also stressed the importance of respecting mining standards and laws to avoid such tragedies in the future.
Unfortunately, despite efforts to raise awareness among artisanal miners, these tragic incidents are increasing. The authorities are reminding us of the obligation to respect safety instructions and the importance of vigilance to prevent further human losses.
Rescue operations continued throughout the night and made it possible to extract three of the four bodies of the deceased victims. However, one body still remains buried under the rubble, a poignant reminder of the violence of this accident.
At the same time, the survivors were taken to the Wanga reference health center to receive the care necessary for their recovery. This new incident adds to the sad list of cases of landslides that have affected the Watsa territory in recent months.
This tragedy is a cruel reminder of the fragility of human life and underlines the urgency of taking concrete measures to ensure safety in artisanal mining operations. Let us hope that this event will serve as a catalyst for implementing preventive actions and preventing such events from happening again in the future.
