In a constantly connected world, the phenomenon of influencers on social networks is taking on a disconcerting scale and raises crucial questions about their impact on young people and society in general. In the DR Congo, as elsewhere, these emerging figures of the virtual sphere arouse both fascination and concern.
Influencers, or rather “influencers”, are particularly attesting to this in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In this country where socio-economic challenges are numerous and where young people aspire to role models and benchmarks, the rise of these social network personalities raises legitimate questions. What exactly do these icons with millions of followers tell us? What is the substance of their words, and what influence do they really exert on their audience?
Superficiality seems to have become a norm, and the emptiness of the content offered by many influencers is striking. Between suggestive nudity, gratuitous provocations and sterile verbal jousts, we are witnessing a kind of race for audience where sensationalism takes precedence over the quality and relevance of the information shared. These “models” are often content to shine through their eccentricity, their exhibitionism or their propensity to shock, leaving aside any form of depth or constructive reflection.
It is high time to question the legitimacy of this ephemeral celebrity and to rethink the criteria that make an individual an “influencer”. Rather than valuing appearance and noise, why not highlight those who contribute significantly to the social, cultural or political life of the nation? Aren’t real influencers those who raise awareness, propose innovative ideas, or act in favor of a noble and laudable cause?
It is essential to restore a certain balance in the way we perceive and value public figures, whether they come from social networks or other media spheres. Instead of being blinded by the flashy and the ephemeral, let us seek to promote authentic, committed and meaningful models. Congolese youth deserve inspiring references, guides who encourage them to cultivate their critical thinking, their creativity and their positive contribution to society.
It is time to turn our backs on emptiness and superficiality, to embrace a more enlightened and more demanding vision of what a true “influencer” should be. By choosing to celebrate intelligence, diversity, empathy and generosity, we will contribute to shaping a more balanced, more thoughtful and more human society. Let us not let triviality dictate our choices and actions; let us aspire to more depth, authenticity and meaning in our interactions and our reference models.
