In the case of the 112 African grey parrots intercepted in Turkey and repatriated to Kindu, a glimmer of hope shines for these protected species. On Friday, December 6, the national airport of Kindu was the scene of an exceptional reception. The Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) welcomed the birds with relief, in collaboration with its local partners and under the benevolent gaze of the provincial authorities.
The story of this rescue operation highlights the effectiveness of international cooperation. Indeed, these parrots had been stolen in Kindu, before being illegally transported to Turkey. A clandestine journey that was however stopped thanks to the concerted action of INTERPOL and CITS in Turkey. The falsified documents that had allowed their transit were thus discovered, and the birds were returned to their original homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Radar Nishuli, ICCN Site Manager in Kindu, did not fail to highlight the importance of this international cooperation. He praised the Turkish authorities for their involvement in this case, while firmly denouncing the trafficking of these magnificent creatures, rightly describing it as an environmental crime. Recalling that the capture and commercialization of African grey parrots remains strictly prohibited, he called for vigilance from the entire community to protect these endangered species.
This rescue of African grey parrots demonstrates the importance of the fight against wildlife trafficking and the need for increased international collaboration to protect biodiversity. It also highlights the crucial role of local authorities and conservation organizations in preserving wildlife.
