## European Union support for FARDC military training: a strategic partnership for the DRC

The European Union’s financial support for the 31st Rapid Intervention Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) marks a significant step in strengthening the capacities of Congolese troops. This contribution of €20 million, intended to support the military training of soldiers, underlines the importance of the partnership between the DRC and the EU in the field of security and defence.

The visit of the spokesperson for the Congolese Government, Patrick Muyaya, to the military training centres of Lwama and Jericho in Kindu provided an opportunity to see the progress made thanks to European support. Indeed, Belgian military expertise, combined with EU financial investment, has contributed to the establishment of a comprehensive training programme for around 4,000 soldiers.

The emphasis on the quality of the training provided to soldiers is a key element of this partnership. Indeed, Patrick Muyaya stressed that recruits receive comprehensive training, including not only operational aspects but also rescue and support techniques in combat situations.

What most impressed the spokesperson for the Congolese Government was the profile of the soldiers in training. Young university students and young women, determined to serve their country under the flag, embody the diversity and determination of the Congolese armed forces.

The European Union’s initiative to provide financial support to the FARDC demonstrates the willingness of the Congolese authorities and EU member states to work together to strengthen security and stability in the DRC. This strategic partnership is part of an approach of cooperation and exchange of military expertise, thus promoting the development of the capabilities of the Congolese armed forces.

In conclusion, the European Union’s support for the military training of the FARDC represents an important step towards consolidating security and defence in the DRC. This exemplary partnership illustrates the fruitful cooperation between the DRC and the EU in the field of security, and demonstrates the common commitment to strengthening the operational capacities of the Congolese armed forces to ensure peace and stability in the region.
