Fatshimetrie, November 7, 2024 – A tragedy has rocked the peaceful community of Fizi-Centre, in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lifeless body of Etienne Mwando, a young man, was discovered last Thursday, hanging in his house. A letter left at the scene bore the poignant statement: “Nimekufa kwa ajili ya Mapenzi” (I am dying because of love).
According to Nebo Mboka, president of the youth of the Fizi territory, Etienne Mwando allegedly took his own life. It was found that he was still wearing a loincloth belonging to his wife at the time of the tragedy. This heartbreaking situation highlighted Etienne’s emotional distress and left the community in shock.
Authorities present at the scene confirmed that it was indeed a suicide. There was no sign of struggle or external intervention, suggesting a deliberate act on the part of the deceased. This tragedy has sparked deep reflection in the Fizi region, reminding us how decisions taken in anger or pain can have irreversible consequences.
Faced with this heartbreaking situation, the Fizi territorial youth president made a poignant appeal to the youth of the region. He urged them not to give in to thoughtless impulses and to seek help in case of emotional distress. It is crucial to accompany and support young people in difficulty in order to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
This act of despair has sent shockwaves through the Fizi community, highlighting the importance of paying attention to the mental health of young people. It is essential to break the taboo surrounding emotional disorders and to promote an environment where speaking out and support are encouraged. By joining forces to support those who suffer in silence, we can prevent future tragedies and offer hope for healing.
In this difficult time, let us remember that life is precious and that every person deserves to be heard, supported and loved. Together, let us make compassion and empathy our driving forces to build a brighter future for all. May the memory of Etienne Mwando be a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the need to watch over one another with kindness and compassion.
