Local governance in the DRC: Towards a future of provincial prosperity

The recent event of the 11th Conference of Provincial Governors in the Democratic Republic of Congo marked a crucial step in strengthening local governance and provincial development. This meeting, held in Kalemie under the theme “Strengthening provincial governance to ensure community cohesion”, was an opportunity for participants to take stock and formulate recommendations aimed at improving the situation in each region.

The recommendations from the various commissions highlight key issues for the stability and progress of the provinces. The Political, Administrative, Security, Legal and Cultural Commission stressed the need to initiate constitutional reforms to ensure the stability of provincial institutions. It is crucial to prevent political interference and ensure the impartiality of judges to strengthen trust in local authorities.

The Socioeconomic and Financial Commission highlighted the importance of regularizing the payment of salaries and operating expenses of provincial officials, as well as increasing investments in economic development. The establishment of special economic zones and agricultural credit banks could stimulate growth and improve the living conditions of the population.

Finally, the Commission for Reconstruction and Infrastructure stressed the urgency of finalizing ongoing infrastructure projects and developing new sources of energy to meet the growing needs of the population. Improving transport infrastructure and public services is a prerequisite for ensuring the sustainable development of the provinces.

The choice of Kolwezi as the next venue for the 12th session of the Conference of Provincial Governors in 2025 illustrates the authorities’ commitment to continuing efforts to consolidate local governance. This initiative demonstrates the collective desire to promote the social, economic and cultural development of the Congolese provinces.

In conclusion, the 11th Conference of Provincial Governors opened new perspectives for the future of the regions of the DRC. By emphasizing cooperation, transparency and the effectiveness of local policies, the authorities aim to strengthen community cohesion and ensure the prosperity of the entire country.
