Fatshimétrie, October 16, 2024 – The prison situation in the central prison of Mbujimayi, in the province of Kasai Central in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was recently the subject of a positive assessment according to the provincial Minister of Justice, Me Pascal Ilunga Hernaince. In an exclusive interview with Fatshimétrie, the minister highlighted the favorable social, medical and nutritional conditions offered to prisoners.

“The prison conditions are considered favorable socially, medically and nutritionally in the central prison of Mbujimayi. There is always a way to treat prisoners because they are always human beings and not animals or subhumans,” said Me Pascal Ilunga.

He highlighted the adequate medical care provided to sick prisoners by permanently present doctors, as well as a regular diet to ensure their well-being. In addition, efforts are being made to differentiate care according to the needs of each inmate, thus ensuring humane and respectful treatment for all.

Mr. Pascal Ilunga stressed the importance of the sentences imposed on prisoners as a means of rehabilitation. He mentioned the prison director who confirmed the involvement of the central government in the care of prisoners. The sentences incurred and the work organized within the establishment contribute to the reintegration of prisoners into society, by preparing them for a change in behavior once released.

To strengthen prison development and prepare prisoners for effective reintegration into society, the Minister unveiled an action plan including the creation of a field dedicated to prisoners, aimed at making them active and useful. He stressed that this initiative is part of a rehabilitation approach aimed at providing prisoners with skills and opportunities for their reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Ultimately, it is crucial to view prisoners as individuals worthy of respect, who should be treated humanely, given real social reintegration and real chances of rehabilitation. The prison system must be conceived not only as a place of punishment, but as a space of transformation and reconstruction for those who stay there, with the aim of fostering a more just and inclusive society.
