Media professionals in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently converged in Kinshasa to participate in a crucial workshop on the safety of journalists online. Organized by the UNESCO office, the event took place under the evocative theme “The safety of journalists online in times of crisis and emergency in the DRC: current situation and perspectives.”
At the heart of the discussions was an alarming observation: Congolese journalists face a series of security challenges while carrying out their work. This worrying situation has raised concerns within the journalistic community, which understands the crucial importance of strengthening their capacities in crisis contexts.
Izaias Barreto, UNESCO Country Representative, stressed the urgency of taking concrete measures to guarantee the protection of journalists online in the DRC. The discussions highlighted the risks and threats to which these media professionals are exposed, as well as their recommendations for ensuring their safety.
Among the main demands of the participants, the adoption of a new draft press law by the Congolese parliament was strongly supported. Indeed, it is imperative that the authorities guarantee an environment conducive to the free and safe exercise of journalism, which is essential to promote the development of democracy and Congolese society as a whole.
Professor Lino Pungi of UNESCO stressed the urgency of action, emphasizing that the safety of journalists is a sine qua non condition to guarantee the progress and development of the nation. It is essential to recognize the crucial role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability and respect for human rights.
This workshop is part of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, celebrated every year on 2 November. It recalls the importance of ensuring that journalists can practice their profession in complete safety, without fear of reprisals for their investigations and reporting.
In conclusion, the safety of online journalists in the DRC remains a major challenge for freedom of expression and democracy in the country.
