The exhibition “Under Fire” highlights the works of four Palestinian artists from Gaza, offering a poignant perspective on the devastating effects of Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip. The artists have demonstrated exceptional resilience in continuing to create despite the extremely difficult conditions and massive destruction in their neighborhoods and cultural centers.
The initiative, overseen by Mohammad Shaqdih, Deputy Director of the Darat al-Funun Foundation, showcases the talent and determination of these artists who have had to face inhumane conditions, such as forced displacement, hunger, and lack of basic resources. Their art is fashioned from simple materials found in their immediate environment, such as pens, school notebooks, pencils, natural dyes such as hibiscus, tea and coffee, and charcoal from wood used for fire and cooking.
Nearly 80 artworks were collected in Egypt before being sent to Jordan to be exhibited at the Darat al-Funun Foundation in Amman. The artists also included written messages accompanying their works, describing their living conditions and psychological state.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to delve into the poignant world of these Palestinian artists, feeling their pain in the face of forced displacement and the destruction of their homes and studios. Each of the works tells a story, testifying to the resilience and moral strength of the artists who refuse to be silenced by war.
The exhibition “Under Fire” offers a unique platform to raise awareness of the complex and often ignored reality of those living under the fire of conflict. It highlights the importance of art as a means of resistance and expression, offering a glimmer of hope in the midst of darkness.
In these times of turmoil and division, the works of these Palestinian artists from Gaza remind us of the power of art to transcend borders and promote understanding between peoples. This exhibition is an invitation to reflection, compassion and solidarity with those who struggle for their survival and dignity in environments marked by violence and destruction.
