Encouraging progress in the fight against Mpox and cholera in the DRC

The news in the Democratic Republic of Congo offers encouraging prospects in the fight against the Monkeypox (Mpox) and cholera epidemics. During the twentieth meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, Roger Kamba, presented figures revealing a downward trend in these infections.

Concerning Mpox, a significant decrease in cases was recorded, from 688 to 603, with a drop in lethality from 1.51% to 1.12%. This downward trend has been observed for three weeks, highlighting a positive progression since the epidemic peak reached in the 38th epidemiological week.

As for cholera, a decrease in the number of new cases, from 480 to 461, was noted, with a slight decrease in the number of deaths, from 9 to 8. The decrease in the lethality rate is also notable, from 1.95% to 1.67%. The most affected provinces remain North Kivu, Haut-Katanga and South Kivu, with North Kivu accounting for 59% of the cases recorded in the country during the week.

Vaccination against malaria has been launched, and measures have been taken to strengthen the response to these epidemics. Raising awareness among the population, prevention and treatment remain at the heart of the government strategy to defeat these health scourges.

These encouraging results demonstrate the efforts made by the authorities and public health actors to stem the spread of infectious diseases in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is essential to maintain this momentum and to continue preventive and curative actions to ensure the health and well-being of the Congolese population.
