The Zzini Media vs. Floyd Mayweather case dates back to 2017, when he allegedly failed to honor a commitment to travel to West Africa. Despite Zzini Media’s efforts to recover the funds, the company eventually filed a lawsuit against the boxer in 2018, accusing him of breach of contract, fraud, and unjust enrichment.
According to court documents, Mayweather is ordered to pay $1,368,142 in damages, $721,881.32 in prejudgment interest, $16,270 in attorneys’ fees, and $285 in court costs. Although Mayweather’s legal team argued that Zzini Media’s non-U.S. status weakened its legal position, the court rejected that claim, holding it liable for the unpaid amount.
Nigerian Company Response
In response to the judgment, Alex Nwankwo, an executive at Zzini Media, said: “After several unsuccessful attempts to recover the appearance fees, the company filed a lawsuit against Mayweather… We are grateful that two courts have granted Zzini Media Ltd.’s request to impose sanctions on Mayweather.”
Following his refusal to settle the debt, the court issued an enforcement order allowing for the seizure of two high-end vehicles from Mayweather’s collection: a 2015 Bugatti GSV and a 2015 Ferrari La Ferrari Aperta.
The Nigerian company’s statement revealed that forensic investigations had identified significant assets that called into question Mayweather’s public statements about his net worth. This highlights the importance for celebrities and athletes to honor the professional commitments they have made, highlighting the potentially costly consequences of failing to honor these agreements.
