National MP Jacques Djoli Eseng’Ekeli recently submitted a bill to the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo, aimed at guaranteeing access to information and transparency in public life. This initiative is part of a crucial approach to strengthening democracy and consolidating the rule of law in the country.
Access to information is an essential pillar of democracy and freedom of expression. By guaranteeing this fundamental right to every citizen, Jacques Djoli’s bill aims to strengthen the transparency and accountability of public institutions. Indeed, free and accessible information allows citizens to fully participate in the democratic life of their country, to better understand political and social issues and to exercise their duty of control over public decision-makers.
By adopting this bill, the DRC would affirm its commitment to freedom of the press and democracy. This text, composed of 75 articles, is part of Article 24 of the Constitution, which enshrines the right to information and freedom of the press. It also guarantees respect for public order and the fundamental rights of everyone.
The International Day for Universal Access to Information, celebrated every September 28, highlights the importance of guaranteeing all citizens equitable access to information. In the DRC, this day was marked by the presentation of the book “Legal Framework for the Media in the DRC” by Patient Ligodi, an event that brought together various actors from the information sector and civil society. This celebration highlighted the impact of the new legal framework on freedom of the press and on the information ecosystem in the country.
In conclusion, Jacques Djoli’s bill represents a significant step forward in the consolidation of democracy in the DRC. By guaranteeing access to information and transparency in public life, this text strengthens the foundations of a free, informed and responsible society. It is now up to political actors and civil society to support this initiative to build together a democratic and transparent future for all Congolese citizens.
