The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) recently conducted military operations in the mining area of Djugu territory, located in Ituri province. These operations aimed to regain control of seven villages occupied by the Zaire and CODECO armed groups.
After a week of intense fighting, the FARDC managed to dislodge the militiamen and regain control of the localities of Galay, Lodjo, Pili Pili, Beba, Plito and Mulanday, located more than 90 kilometers north of Bunia. These actions not only made it possible to neutralize some militiamen, but also to discover an underground dungeon maintained by the Zaire militia in Mulanday.
These military operations also allowed the return of more than seven thousand displaced persons who had fled the violence in the region, particularly in Mongwalu. Indeed, thirteen out of fifteen groups in the Banyari Kilo sector were occupied by local armed groups, creating an unbearable situation for the local population.
The main objective of these operations is to dismantle these militias and restore security in the region, thus allowing the return of displaced populations. The clashes between the armed groups CODECO and Zaire for control of mining resources, particularly gold, have long disrupted the lives of the inhabitants of the region.
The FARDC continues to conduct operations in the area to ensure control of the entire mining zone and guarantee the security of the population. These actions demonstrate the commitment of the Congolese authorities to fight against armed groups and restore peace and stability in the Ituri region.
In conclusion, the recapture of these villages by the FARDC is a crucial step in the fight against armed groups in the DRC. This shows the authorities’ determination to protect civilian populations and restore order in areas affected by armed conflict.
