Nigerian MP Alex Ikwechegh’s Contempt: Abuse of Power and Political Arrogance

The article highlights the shocking case involving Nigerian Representative Alex Ikwechegh assaulting a Bolt driver during a home delivery. The viral video shows Ikwechegh justifying his behavior by his social status, threatening the driver, and beating him. This case reveals a blatant abuse of power and underscores the importance of transparency and accountability for elected officials.
In a recent incident that sparked outrage online, Nigerian Representative Alex Ikwechegh was caught on camera assaulting a Bolt driver while delivering a parcel to his home in Maitama, Abuja. The viral video shows the MP, elected for the Aba North and South Federal Constituency (APGA), repeatedly slapping driver Stephen Abuwatseya, who asked him to step outside to collect his parcel.

The incident highlights a blatant abuse of power, where Ikwechegh, visibly offended by what he perceived as disrespect, justified his actions by citing his social status. The footage shows him making threats against the driver, even suggesting that he could make him “disappear” without consequences.

The situation quickly escalated when Abuwatseya demanded payment for his fare, leading to a series of slaps from Ikwechegh. “Do you know who I am? I slapped you and there is nothing you can do,” he arrogantly declared on camera, daring the driver to go public with the incident and even call the Inspector General of Police.

In the background of this incident is the recent decision of the National Electoral Tribunal nullifying the victory of the Labour Party candidate, Emeka Nnamani, in favour of Alex Ikwechegh for the constituency. This decision followed allegations of forgery of certificates against Nnamani.

It is worth noting that this case echoes an earlier controversy in 2015, when Nnamani was confronted with questions regarding his party membership and academic qualifications. Despite his denials, he had then cited issues with the management of records at the University of Port Harcourt as a factor that impacted his documents.

This episode highlights the abuse of power and unacceptable behavior of some political representatives who believe themselves to be above the law. It also underlines the importance of transparency and accountability of elected officials towards the citizens they are supposed to serve. These deplorable actions must be condemned and those responsible held accountable for their actions, regardless of their social or political status.
