Standing at an impressive 160 metres (525 feet) tall and spread over 32 floors, this imposing edifice is more than just a building; it embodies Nigeria’s economic growth and infrastructure modernisation.
Designed by British architects Nickson and Borys and built by the Costain Group, NECOM House is a symbol of Nigeria’s stature as an economic giant in Africa. It was constructed using a reinforced concrete structure, a feature commonly found in skyscrapers of the era. An impressive mast was specially incorporated into the design to support heavy telecommunications and broadcasting equipment.
Beyond its practical functionality, NECOM House also played a symbolic role as a beacon for the Port of Lagos, reinforcing its importance in the cityscape. Despite challenges such as a fire in the upper floors in 1983, NECOM House’s reinforced concrete structure has proven itself resilient, withstanding damage. This is a testament to the quality of its construction and the building’s durability over time.
While new skyscrapers have emerged in Lagos since NECOM House was built, none have yet surpassed its imposing height and historical significance. While the Champagne Pearl in Eko Atlantic boasts more floors, it cannot match NECOM House’s majesty and significance to Nigeria’s architectural and economic history.
Thus, NECOM House remains not only the tallest skyscraper in Nigeria, but also a silent witness to the country’s evolution and progress, embodying the vision and ambition of a nation on the rise.
