Drastic reform: President Tinubu cuts government spending

The article reports on a decision by the President to reduce government spending by limiting the number of vehicles and security personnel for ministers and other officials. This follows previous initiatives to reduce the cost of governance, such as reducing the size of official delegations on foreign trips. The move could mark a turning point in the management of government resources and strengthen financial accountability within the administration.
The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement issued on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

Onanuga said, “No additional vehicles will be assigned to them for their travels.”

According to the presidential adviser, the move is part of the federal government’s efforts to reduce the cost of governance in light of current realities.

The move comes nine months after Tinubu took a significant step to reduce government expenditure by reducing his entourage on foreign trips from 50 to 20 officials.

At the same time, he reduced the Vice President’s entourage to five officials for foreign trips and 15 for local trips.

Furthermore, in the directive issued today, the President “directed all Ministers, Ministers of State and Heads of Agencies to have not more than five security personnel in their service.

“The security team will consist of four police officers and one officer from the Department of State Security (DSS). No additional security personnel will be assigned,” he said.

Tinubu also directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to work with the armed forces, paramilitary forces and security agencies to agree on an appropriate reduction in their vehicles and personnel.

The statement added: “President Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser to work with the armed forces, paramilitary forces and security agencies to determine an appropriate reduction in their deployment of vehicles and security personnel.”

The move could potentially mark a turning point in the management of government resources and promote greater financial accountability in the administration.
