Fatshimetrie, October 22, 2024: The shortage of drinking water remains one of the major problems in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in the territory of Kibombo, located in the province of Maniema. This shortage of drinking water has dramatic consequences for the local population, exposed to waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and typhoid fever. These diseases, often fatal, are rampant in the region, causing many deaths among the inhabitants.
The lack of access to clean water pushes citizens to consume undeveloped sources, runoff water or untreated rainwater, thus endangering their health. The consequences of this situation are disastrous, and the political-administrative authorities, whether provincial or national, seem to remain deaf to the calls for action issued by civil society. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bahina Association denounces the guilty silence of leaders, particularly parliamentarians, in the face of this humanitarian crisis that is hitting the population of Kibombo hard.
Women, particularly affected by this situation, find themselves forced to go out at night in search of water, exposed to the risk of rape and other violence. This reality is unacceptable and highlights the urgent need to act to guarantee the local population access to drinking water, a fundamental right that is too often violated.
It is imperative that provincial and national authorities take immediate measures to remedy this critical situation. The mobilization of all, committed citizens, civil society organizations and political actors, is essential to find sustainable and effective solutions to the shortage of drinking water that afflicts the territory of Kibombo. It is time to act with determination and solidarity to put an end to this injustice that threatens the lives and dignity of the most vulnerable populations. The health and well-being of all must be a top priority, and it is up to everyone to take responsibility for building a better future for all.
