Growing insecurity in the rural commune of Kasindi-Lubiriha, located on the border with Uganda, is a major concern for the Fédération des entreprises du Congo (FEC). This region is the scene of increasingly frequent nighttime raids, often marked by knife attacks, sowing fear among the local population.
The vice-president of the local FEC, Pofile Kalengya, points to the relocation of the fish market to neighboring Uganda as one of the causes of this increase in insecurity. This decision has deprived many residents of Kasindi-Lubiriha of their source of income, leading to growing frustration and precariousness within the community, thus fostering the emergence of tensions and criminal acts.
The consequences of this relocation are disastrous, as evidenced by the many victims injured during violent attacks at home. More than 15 cases of machete head injuries have been recorded, leaving deep physical and psychological scars. In this alarming context, Pofile Kalengya’s request for increased security measures and the return of the fish market in Kasindi-Lubiriha is legitimate and urgent.
The reestablishment of the fish market in the region could not only revitalize the local economy by providing new employment opportunities, but also contribute to restoring a climate of security and stability. By bringing commercial activities back to the heart of the community, the Government could effectively meet the expectations of the inhabitants of Kasindi-Lubiriha, while strengthening the social and economic fabric of the region.
It is imperative that the relevant authorities take concrete and immediate measures to respond to this security and socio-economic crisis. The return of the fish market in Kasindi-Lubiriha must not only be considered, but actively supported and implemented to promote the sustainable development of the region and ensure the safety and well-being of its population. It is time to act to restore peace and prosperity to Kasindi-Lubiriha.
