Rising prices of quinquina bark on international markets: a trend to watch

In the dynamic world of international trade in agricultural products, an interesting trend was observed in international markets in October 2024: a significant increase in the price of cinchona bark, a marketable product of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to information recently published by the National Commission of Mercuriales of the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the price of one kilogram of cinchona bark increased by 1.31%, from USD 1.53 to USD 1.55 during the period from October 14 to 19, 2024. This increase may seem modest at first glance, but it reflects an interesting trend in the market.

In addition to cinchona bark, three other agricultural and forestry products also recorded price increases during the same period. Totaquina powder, quinine salt and Rauwolfia traded at USD 54.60, USD 92.82 and USD 1.55 per kilogram, respectively, registering increases of 1.11%, 1.11% and 1.31% compared to the previous week.

However, not all products experienced the same trend: robusta and arabica coffee as well as cocoa, on the contrary, recorded a decrease in their prices on international markets. These products traded at USD 5.13, USD 4.88 and USD 6.81 per kilogram, respectively, registering decreases of 7.40%, 6.87% and 5.15%.

This fluctuation in the prices of agricultural and forestry products on international markets is the result of various factors, including supply and demand as well as supply chain dynamics. These elements directly influence prices and can impact producers, exporters and consumers.

In conclusion, the evolution of prices of cinchona bark and other tradeable products highlights the importance of closely monitoring the global market for agricultural products. Price fluctuations can provide opportunities for some players while posing challenges for others. It is therefore essential to stay informed and adapt to changes in order to thrive in this dynamic business environment.
