In preparation for the elections of council chairmen and municipal councillors in the 23 local councils and 255 wards in Kaduna State, scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2024, the Kaduna State Security Council has announced a statewide restriction of movement from 6am to 7pm on election day.
The restriction, according to Samuel Aruwan, the Acting Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, is aimed at ensuring the smooth and peaceful conduct of the elections. “Vehicle movement, business activities and any related engagement likely to disrupt public order shall cease during the restricted period,” Aruwan said. “Only persons on essential duty, with proper identification and clearance, are exempted from this directive.”
Aruwan urged citizens to avoid any action that could jeopardize public peace or disrupt the smooth conduct of the elections, adding that security forces have been deployed to enforce the restriction and ensure compliance.
Residents are encouraged to report any disturbance or threat to public order to security agencies, rather than taking matters into their own hands. To this effect, the Kaduna State Security Operations Room can be contacted on the following numbers: 09034000060, 08170189999.
The importance of these restrictive measures during an election day cannot be overemphasized. Security and stability are critical aspects of ensuring free and fair elections. By restricting potentially disruptive movements and activities, the authorities are ensuring that the democratic process is conducted smoothly and safely.
It is imperative that citizens fully cooperate with the security forces and comply with the restrictions in place. By demonstrating responsibility and civic-mindedness, each individual contributes to ensuring an environment conducive to the democratic exercise of their right to vote. Therefore, it is crucial that all actors involved in the electoral process comply with the established guidelines to ensure transparent and peaceful elections.
In conclusion, the restriction of movement during the 2024 Kaduna State elections is a necessary measure to ensure the security and integrity of the electoral process. By following these guidelines and being vigilant in respecting the rules, we can all contribute to free, fair and peaceful elections.
