Fighting Drug Trafficking in Ebonyi State: NDLEA’s Decisive Actions

The latest report by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) highlights the remarkable actions of the Ebonyi State Command in combating illicit drug trafficking. With an impressive seizure of 115,226 kilograms of various illicit substances and the arrest of 149 suspects in the third quarter of the current year, the agency has clearly demonstrated its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and health of the people.

The Ebonyi State Commandant, Peter Ogar, shared these startling figures in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki. He noted that these arrests and seizures took place in various locations across the state between July and September 2024. The agency’s efforts were not limited to strict law enforcement but also included sensitization and prevention, with 82 suspects receiving counseling and support to combat drug abuse.

The seizures netted a wide variety of drugs, ranging from crack cocaine, cannabis, codeine syrup and Tramadol tablets. This diversity of illicit substances is a testament to the complexity of the problem facing the society. Furthermore, the fact that 149 suspects were arrested, including 37 women, highlights the need to increase awareness on the dangers of drugs and work together to combat the scourge.

The NDLEA’s commitment extends beyond field operations, with sensitization campaigns conducted among youths and community leaders. Close collaboration with other security agencies was also highlighted, underscoring the importance of unity in the fight against drug trafficking.
