Strengthening national resilience: the new approach to risk management in the DRC

Fatshimetrie, October 13, 2024 – At the heart of the concerns of the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo is the unwavering will to strengthen the implementation of the essential provisions of the national strategy for risk and disaster management. This priority commitment was confirmed at the 17th meeting of the Council of Ministers, where the Prime Minister reaffirmed the need for reinforced and coordinated action to address the recurring challenges facing the country.

Faced with the recurrence of tragedies and far from being satisfied with short-term responses, the government responded with a more structural and preventive approach. Thus, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior, was invited to reactivate risk management coordination in collaboration with the main actors involved. This initiative aims to anticipate risks, strengthen the resilience of communities and prevent disasters as much as possible.

In an effort to proactively manage crises, a government delegation travelled to Goma, North Kivu province, to manage the aftermath of the recent shipwreck on Lake Kivu. This mission undertook a thorough assessment of the situation, implementing humanitarian assistance measures and launching the judicial process to establish responsibilities.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of this holistic approach, aimed at addressing all aspects of the consequences of such a tragedy. This demonstrates the government’s firm commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the population, while ensuring that those responsible for the incidents are held accountable.

In conclusion, the Democratic Republic of Congo affirms its determination to improve risk and disaster management, by adopting a proactive, coordinated and multi-sectoral approach. This shift in focus towards prevention and resilience is a crucial step towards ensuring the country’s sustainable security and development.
