Sanitation of school environments in Kinshasa: a major initiative for the education of young people

Fatshimetrie, October 13, 2024 (ACP) – A major initiative has been launched in Kinshasa to clean up the city’s school environments. Indeed, under the leadership of the provincial Minister of Education and New Citizenship, a campaign to evacuate garbage and informal businesses around schools was undertaken. This first phase took place at the Lycée technique et professionnel de Matonge, located in Kalamu, in the heart of the Congolese capital.

Jeannot Canon la Rose, Minister in charge of Education and New Citizenship, explained that this operation aimed to rid the areas around schools of waste, illegal markets, illegal constructions and abandoned vehicles. He stressed the importance of providing a healthy environment conducive to learning for students in Kinshasa.

The establishments concerned by this first stage include the Matonge Technical and Vocational High School Complex, the Kalamu Scientific and Technical Institute and the Tony Mwaba nursery school. This initiative is part of a global approach to enhancing school spaces and preserving the study environment.

Jean Marie Mvuzi, Director of the Funa Education Province, recalled that the President of the Republic, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, had recently noted the congestion of the areas around schools by shops and informal constructions, disrupting the smooth running of classes. Following this observation, Minister Jeannot Canon implemented the Head of State’s directives by launching this clean-up operation.

The relevant authorities, such as the Provincial Minister for the Beautification of the City of Kinshasa, Léon Mulumba, also took part in this major project. This action aims to offer students optimal learning conditions by removing the obstacles that hinder their education.

This school environment sanitation operation demonstrates the commitment of the Congolese authorities to promote a healthy and safe educational environment for the younger generations. It constitutes an important step in the establishment of infrastructures conducive to the education and development of students in Kinshasa.
