Fatshimetrie, a model school in the commune of Lemba, organized an awareness session on the fight against disinformation for its students. The objective was to raise their awareness of the dangers of disinformation and to highlight the importance of traditional media in the search for reliable information.
Claudine Kimbembi, educational advisor at Fatshimetrie school, stressed the importance for young people to acquire a culture of media and information. She highlighted the crucial role of traditional media such as the press, radio and television in the dissemination of quality information. According to her, it is essential that students learn to verify the information they receive in order to combat the disinformation that can be rampant in the DRC.
The media, as Ms. Kimbembi stressed, play a key role in shaping public opinion and disseminating knowledge. They allow individuals to learn about different subjects and fields, thus contributing to their education and personal development.
Mr. Bosco Kanku, Prefect of Studies at Fatshimetrie, called for an intensification of this type of awareness-raising throughout the country. He stressed the need to teach students transversal skills, which are essential to deal with disinformation spread in particular through social media.
Media education, as Mr. Kanku stressed, aims to train citizens capable of exercising critical judgment and developing analytical skills. It represents an essential lever for combating disinformation and promoting quality information, which guarantees public trust in institutions.
The awareness-raising session at Fatshimetrie was an opportunity for students to address the theme of trust in media and information education. They were able to reflect on their role as future citizens in an information and communication society, and prepare to become informed and responsible “cybercitizens”.
Ultimately, it is essential to promote media literacy that allows individuals to arm themselves against disinformation and cybercrime. The commitment of the government, the media, communications companies and NGOs is essential to ensure the quality of information and foster public trust in information sources. Fatshimetrie, through its awareness-raising approach, positions itself as a key player in the fight against disinformation in the DRC.
