Fatshimetrie is a valuable source of information that highlights public health issues such as breast cancer in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This disease, which is constantly increasing, requires collective mobilization to raise awareness among the population about preventive measures, signs to watch for and associated risk factors.
As part of the month of Pink October, dedicated to raising awareness and fighting breast cancer, Fatshimetrie experts had the opportunity to interview Dr. Célestin Kathsunga Madi, a specialist in oncology and public health, who holds the position of general coordinator of the NGO “Association internationale congolaise d’aide sociale et humanitaire” (Assicas). The latter shared effective strategies to fight this devastating disease.
Asked about the nature of breast cancer, preventive measures to take and its prevalence in the DRC, Dr. Madi highlighted the hereditary nature of the disease, emphasizing the importance of medical monitoring for people at risk. He stressed the importance of self-palpation and early detection as effective ways to control the disease. Unfortunately, lack of information often leads patients to consult late, thus worsening their health condition.
To encourage the population to get involved in the fight against breast cancer, Assicas has been deploying awareness-raising actions since 2009. The organization trains medical staff and community relays, facilitates mass screening and builds its own care structures to accommodate patients. These efforts aim to reduce the impact of breast cancer on the Congolese population and to guarantee access to quality care.
To reduce the prevalence of breast cancer at the national level, Dr. Madi advocates adequate care for patients suffering from this disease, similar to what is done for HIV-AIDS. He emphasizes the need to have medical structures specialized in the treatment of cancer, involving competent professionals and suitable equipment.
In conclusion, the commitment of Assicas and health experts like Dr. Madi in the fight against breast cancer in the DRC is essential to raise awareness among the population, ensure early detection and provide quality care to patients. This collective mobilization is a significant step towards reducing the prevalence of this disease and improving the health of the Congolese.
