Restoring order and unity in the APC: Alex Blackson’s decisive call to Bayelsa

Fatshimetrie was the scene of a major meeting in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, raising concerns within the All Progressives Congress (APC) party and reigniting tensions between members of the Southern Ijaw faction and those from Ekeremor towns. Statements made by some persons claiming to be members of the APC executive from these areas have highlighted a deep misunderstanding of the current situation within the party in Bayelsa State.

Alex Blackson, a concerned APC member, spoke to clarify the contentious issues, calling for stern action by the National Executive Committee of the APC against members of the Southern Ijaw faction who would attempt to tarnish the image and reputation of the party.

He particularly highlighted allegations of suspension against the former APC Governor-elect, Chief David Lyon, as well as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. Alex Blackson noted that a case he brought before the High Court in January 2022 led to a court order quashing the party’s executive in Bayelsa State as well as a restraining order against the same individuals who were posing as members of the APC executive in the state.

He recalled that due to lack of follow-up by the opposing parties, no appeal was taken, thereby tainting the legitimacy of these individuals to make decisions that fall within the party’s executive. He also cautioned the authorities against potentially disruptive actions that could be taken by these contested members.

Alex Blackson stressed the need for the APC National Executive Committee to take immediate steps to restore order and smooth functioning of the party in Bayelsa State. He called for the establishment of an ad hoc committee that would restore cohesion and authority within the local chapter of the party.

It is hoped that these calls for unity and legality will resolve the internal divisions within the APC and preserve the integrity of the party in Nigeria.
