Rehabilitation of Kinshasa’s arteries: Towards uncompromising road modernization

Fatshimetrie, October 9, 2024 – Preparations for the finalization of the rehabilitation works of the arteries of the city of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo were recently the subject of a crucial meeting within the government. Indeed, the Minister of Finance, Doudou Fwamba Likunde Li-Botayi, chaired a major working session in the presence of the Governor of the city of Kinshasa, Daniel Bumba Lubaki. The main objective of this meeting was to coordinate the efforts of different stakeholders to effectively relaunch the road infrastructure improvement projects in the Congolese capital.

During this meeting, discussions mainly focused on the arterial rehabilitation projects of the “3 communes” and the “5 arteries”, which aim to renovate no less than 49 kilometers of roads in various municipalities of Kinshasa. The crucial importance of collaboration and coordination between the City of Kinshasa, the Office of Roads and Drainage (OVD) and the Ministry of Infrastructure was highlighted to ensure the proper conduct and compliance with deadlines for these projects.

Minister Doudou Fwamba also stressed the need to scrupulously respect the laws and regulations in force, stressing that the progress of the work must not be to the detriment of the integrity of the legal framework. In addition, he encouraged the economic actors involved to take advantage of this opportunity to fulfill their commitments and actively contribute to improving the city’s infrastructure.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to take stock of the progress of the various projects, assess the progress made on the ground and establish a plan for the imminent resumption of work. Governor Daniel Bumba welcomed the involvement of the central government, in particular the vision of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, in the development and modernization of Kinshasa’s urban roads.

In the interests of transparency and efficiency, an updated timetable for the work was presented at the meeting, with the prospect of the imminent signing of a memorandum of understanding between the government and the service providers. This contractual document will ensure that each party’s commitments are respected, particularly with regard to the deadlines and quality of the work to be carried out.

In short, this meeting highlighted the commitment of the Congolese authorities to improve Kinshasa’s road infrastructure in compliance with the standards and deadlines set. This is a crucial step in the collective effort to modernize and develop the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
