Nigeria is facing an unprecedented economic crisis, with prices of food, fuel and essential goods skyrocketing, threatening the very survival of its people. This alarming situation prompted Senator Ndume to speak passionately on Friday, October 11, 2024. He highlighted the devastating impact of the soaring inflation on Nigerians.
Ndume singled out what he termed “bad elements” seeking to sabotage Tinubu’s administration, blaming the President’s advisers for pushing for drastic reforms instead of addressing inflation and exchange rate issues.
This comes after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced its latest increase in petrol prices on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, raising the price of fuel to ₦1,030 per litre. These measures, coupled with the removal of subsidies and other economic policies, have plunged families in Borno, Ndume’s home state, into immeasurable suffering. Farmers are unable to transport their goods to markets due to exorbitant transportation costs.
Ndume, however, was keen to stress his belief in President Tinubu’s goodwill towards Nigeria and its people, while urging him to be wary of ill-intentioned advisers. He lamented the unbearable burden imposed on Nigerians by such individuals who sow discord between the people and the administration of the day.
It is now imperative that measures are taken to mitigate the devastating effects of this economic crisis that is hitting the nation hard. Combating inflation, poverty and inequality must be a top priority to ensure a better future for all Nigerians.
