The city of Ibadan, located in Nigeria, is full of ancient architectural treasures that are a testament to its rich history and culture. These structures, which are decades old, still stand today, serving as a testament to the city’s cultural and historical preservation.
The ancient architecture of these buildings is not a sign of stagnation, but rather a reflection of Ibadan’s commitment to protecting its heritage. Many European cities have retained their medieval charm, and Ibadan is no exception.
Some of the oldest buildings in Ibadan include:
1. Mapo Hall
Mapo Hall, a former city hall in Ibadan, is a colonial-style building located next to Bere Market. Built in 1929 during the colonial era and commissioned by Captain Ross, it is known for its seven columns representing the city’s seven hills. Renovated in 2008, it serves as a museum showcasing the history of Ibadan, with pictures of the rulers from the first to the last, as well as relics from the colonial era.
2. Cocoa House
The Western Regional Government built the 26-storey Cocoa House in 1965 in Dugbe, Ibadan. Owned by the Odu’a Investment Company, the building was once the tallest structure in tropical Africa. Destroyed by fire in 1985, it was rehabilitated in 1992. Today, it serves as a venue for social events, broadcasting companies and major businesses.
3. Bower Memorial Tower
This tower is a historical landmark that showcases the beauty of Ibadan’s brown iron roofs. Captain Robert Lister Bower, for whom the tower is named, unveiled the Bower Tower in 1936. The Native Authority of Ibadan built the tower, which has 47 spiral staircases and stands over sixty feet high, perched atop Oke Are Hill in Igbo Agala, Ibadan.
4. St. David’s Cathedral
This church is the oldest in Ibadan and perhaps other Western states of Nigeria. Founded by the German missionary and evangelist, the late David Hiderer on April 27, 1853, it was run with the help of his interpreter, the late Rev. Daniel Olubi, who became the first native vicar of the church. It is located in Oluyole, Ibadan.
5. St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral
This majestic stone-brick cathedral is located in Aremo, Ibadan. It is one of the oldest Anglican churches in Ibadan, founded in 1895. The architecture is magnificent and very similar to that of European cathedrals.
These historic buildings in Ibadan are a testament to the city’s rich culture and heritage, and their preservation is essential to pass on this history to future generations.
