On the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, former President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed to Nigerians to unite to overcome their current challenges. In a statement released on his platform X (formerly Twitter), he acknowledged the economic challenges Nigerians have been facing since the removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Many peaceful protests have erupted across the country as citizens have expressed their grievances and demands. In the face of these challenges of hardship, hunger and the various socio-political challenges plaguing the country, Jonathan assured Nigerians that there is hope at the end of the tunnel.

“As we mark this important day, I encourage Nigerians to remain optimistic, resilient and committed to the greatness of our nation despite the odds. With common purpose, zeal and love for one another, we can overcome our challenges and build a prosperous nation where every citizen has equal opportunities to thrive.”

Since 1960, Nigeria has made significant strides in various sectors, overcoming countless obstacles in its journey to nationhood. We have seen sustained democracy in this Fourth Republic for 25 years, following the end of military rule in 1999.

Despite this progress, significant challenges persist that test our resolve and resilience as a people. These challenges include our inability to achieve our goals of security, economic growth, national cohesion and infrastructure development.

To deepen our democracy and foster inclusive economic growth, we must strengthen our institutions and develop a democratic culture that supports peaceful, transparent, free and fair elections. This is the basis of good governance, sustainable democracy, national unity and peaceful coexistence.

As a nation, we must recommit ourselves to the principles of justice, equity and inclusion. We must harness our diversity, harness the potential of our youth and harness our natural resources for the benefit of all.

On this commemorative day, I encourage Nigerians to remain optimistic, resilient and committed to the greatness of our nation despite the odds. With common purpose, zeal and love for one another, we can overcome our challenges and build a prosperous nation where every citizen has equal opportunities to thrive.

This call for unity and hope by former President Jonathan resonates as a message of optimism and determination for the future of Nigeria. As the country celebrates its history and journey to independence, it is essential that every Nigerian contributes to building a strong, united and prosperous nation for years to come.
