Constitutional revision in the DRC: A burning debate for the democratic future

The issue of constitutional revision in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to fuel debates and divide public opinion. While President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi advances his project to change the Constitution, reactions are strong and contrasting within the political class and Congolese society.

The presidential initiative gives rise to strong positions, with on one side the supporters of the project who see it as an opportunity to stabilize the political future of the country, and on the other the opponents who fear a perpetuation of the power in place. At the heart of this debate, influential figures such as Jean-Claude Katende, civil society actor and human rights defender, express their disagreement with this approach.

For Jean-Claude Katende, the desire to establish a fourth Republic in order to allow President Tshisekedi to remain in power beyond 2028 is perceived as a threat to democracy and the interests of the Congolese people. With strong words, he warns against the harmful consequences that such a constitutional revision could entail.

On the other hand, personalities such as Vital Kamerhe, a close collaborator of President Tshisekedi, support the presidential approach by insisting on the legality of this initiative and the need for in-depth reflection. Kamerhe calls for the establishment of a multidisciplinary commission to study the issue rigorously, while clarifying that the Head of State is acting in accordance with the Constitution.

The polarization of positions between the majority and the opposition, between supporters and detractors of the constitutional revision, raises crucial issues for the democratic future of the country. Faced with this division, it is essential to favor dialogue and consultation in order to find consensual and democratic solutions to meet the aspirations of the Congolese people.

Ultimately, it is the strength of each political actor and civil society that will determine the course to follow in this crucial debate for the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is essential to remain attentive to the evolution of the situation and to promote constructive dialogue to ensure stability and democracy in the country.
