During his speech at the UN General Assembly, the Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the need for Africa and Arab countries to obtain permanent seats in the UN Security Council. Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty said that the lack of permanent representation for Africa and the Arab states in the Security Council was unacceptable, and that these regions should benefit from the privileges that come with it.
During his speech, he referred to the Sirte Declaration and the Ezulwini Consensus, agreements aimed at correcting historical injustices committed against the African continent. He stressed the need to restore balance and ensure adequate representation for these regions in the most influential decision-making body of the UN.
Furthermore, the minister called for a ceasefire in the Gaza region, as the conflict approaches its twelfth month. He stressed that his government’s priority is to end hostilities and ensure security and stability in the region. He also called for the immediate provision of medical and humanitarian assistance to civilians in the enclave, who are facing an increasingly worrying humanitarian situation.
This firm stance by the Egyptian Foreign Minister reflects Egypt’s commitment to international peace and justice. It also underlines the importance of equitable representation of the world’s various regions in international institutions, with the aim of promoting cooperation and dialogue among nations.
