Canine vaccination: a crucial bulwark against rabies

Fatshimetrie, September 28, 2024 – On this World Rabies Day, a crucial question arises: that of the annual vaccination of dogs to eradicate this devastating disease. The provincial Minister of Fisheries and Livestock of Kongo Central launched a poignant appeal for awareness among dog owners and keepers in Matadi, emphasizing the vital importance of this preventive action.

Indeed, rabies is a zoonosis, a disease transmissible from dogs to humans, which causes silent and deadly devastation every year. Regular vaccination of dogs is the first line of defense against this dreaded disease. Minister Fiston Lubaki stressed that the responsibility of dog owners is essential to put an end to this threat, which mainly affects the most vulnerable populations.

This year, the Democratic Republic of Congo committed to actively combating rabies, with the ambitious goal of eradicating the disease by 2030. The National Action Plan for the Integrated Fight against Human Rabies Transmitted by Dogs was implemented, with the Kongo Central province at the forefront. The city of Kisantu was chosen as the launch site for the pilot phase, demonstrating the country’s firm commitment to protecting its population against this scourge.

The various stakeholders involved in this fight, from community relays to area chief doctors and environmental agents, are working hand in hand to raise awareness, train and vaccinate. The Red Cross, fisheries and livestock inspectors, and animal health professionals are joining forces to protect the population against rabies.

In conclusion, vaccinating your dog is not only of individual importance, but also of collective importance. It contributes to the health and safety of the entire community. On this day dedicated to the fight against rabies, let us remember that prevention is our best ally to put an end to this deadly threat. It is up to all of us to act, starting now, for a future without rabies.
