In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, the head of Sudan’s armed forces on Thursday called on militias in his country to lay down their arms and stop fighting.
General Abdel-Fattah Burhan spoke as renewed fighting rocked the Sudanese capital with airstrikes and drone attacks in and around Khartoum, even as a cholera outbreak worsened, officials said.
For months, some of the worst fighting has been in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state. Forces from the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) have besieged the city since May.
“The Dagalo family has violated all laws and international obligations with impunity,” Burhan said. “The family refuses to abide by the Juba Declaration and rejects the UN Security Council resolutions.”
The Sudanese Armed Forces launched an early morning operation to regain control of areas of the capital that were held by their enemy, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Sudanese media reported increased military movements and airstrikes in Khartoum and Omdurman neighborhoods, the largest in the capital region in months.
With the escalation of violence and the deepening humanitarian crisis, it is imperative that the parties concerned find common ground to end the suffering of the population and work together towards a future of peace and stability for Sudan.
