Judicial reform in the DRC: Towards more efficient and accessible justice

Fatshimetrie, September 24, 2024 – The Congolese judicial system is undergoing a major transformation. Indeed, the Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals of the Democratic Republic of Congo recently set up a Special Commission responsible for reforming certain essential laws in order to adapt them to the realities of the country.

This initiative aims to thoroughly rethink the functioning of the Congolese justice system, with an emphasis on the effectiveness and relevance of the laws in force. The commission is composed of highly qualified members who are called upon to reflect on and propose innovative solutions to improve the judicial system.

Minister Constant Mutamba was keen to emphasize the importance of involving all stakeholders in the Congolese justice system, including magistrates, government experts, representatives of the Bar and the Chamber of Bailiffs, as well as members of civil society. This inclusive approach guarantees a reform in line with the real needs of the population and professionals in the sector.

During the Commission’s launch ceremony, several figures from the Congolese justice system took part in the discussions, thus highlighting the importance and scope of this approach. Speakers included the Attorney General of the Constitutional Court, the First President of the Court of Cassation, the President of the High Military Court, the Special Advisor to the Head of State on Security, the Secretary General of Justice, the First President of the Council of State, the Advocates General, the Attorneys General and the National Bar Association.

This reform of the judicial system in the DRC promises to be a major step forward in consolidating the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights. By promoting the efficiency and accessibility of justice, it will help to strengthen the confidence of the Congolese people in the country’s judicial institutions.
