Fight against domestic violence: An innovative approach at the University of Bandundu

Fatshimétrie, September 24, 2024 (ACP).- The fight against domestic crime has taken on a new dimension at the University of Bandundu, capital of the Kwilu province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. An innovative initiative was set up by a group of law students, in collaboration with the U-report/UNICEF community, to raise awareness among the population on the issues related to domestic violence and to promote legal solutions for its prevention and repression.

This initiative was structured around a unique “mock trial”, aimed at simulating a real trial including the presentation of evidence, pleadings and the delivery of a verdict based on the provisions of Articles 44 and 45 of the Penal Code Book II. This approach allowed participants to put their theoretical knowledge into practice and strengthen their understanding of the legal mechanisms related to domestic violence.

According to Trésor Muzama, responsible for this initiative, it is essential to raise awareness among the population on the different aspects of domestic violence in order to build a more just and secure society. He stressed the importance of recognizing and addressing all forms of violence in order to ensure mutual respect within couples.

Bellone Ntembe Espoir, in charge of U-report/Unicef Bandundu activities, highlighted the negative impact of certain television productions on the perception of marital relationships. He stressed the need to raise awareness among the population to avoid trivializing violence and encourage mutual respect within couples.

This educational approach thus contributes to raising awareness and encouraging collective reflection on the prevention and repression of domestic violence. By promoting dialogue and awareness, this initiative paves the way for a more equitable society that respects the rights of each individual.

The University of Bandundu, through this unprecedented activity, demonstrates its commitment to promoting mutual respect within couples and combating all forms of domestic violence. This initiative demonstrates a collective desire to change mentalities and build a future where everyone can live in a healthy and fulfilling environment. Through education and awareness-raising, it is possible to build a more just and united society, where domestic violence no longer has a place.
