International Week of the Deaf 2024 in the DRC: Portrait of deaf people and progress towards inclusion

**International Week of the Deaf 2024 in the DRC: Portrait of deaf people**

Every year, from September 23 to 28, the whole world celebrates the International Week of the Deaf. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, this celebration is of particular importance. Under the High Patronage of the Prime Minister, Judith Suminwa Tuluka, the Government is actively committed to promoting the inclusion of deaf people through the promotion of Congolese Sign Language.

This year’s edition was marked by committed speeches and concrete actions in favor of people living with hearing disabilities. Despite the absence of the Minister Delegate Irène Esambo Diata, represented by the Secretary General of the Ministry, François Kasanda, the event was a success. The speakers all stressed the importance of making Congolese Sign Language a national language in its own right, to break down communication barriers and promote social inclusion.

The presentation of the first “Dictionary of Congolese Sign Language” marked a significant step forward in the recognition and promotion of this language. Deaf associations called on the Government, partners and civil society to invest in sign language training projects, in order to enable deaf people to flourish and actively participate in the social and economic life of the country.

Beyond the speeches, action was at the heart of this international week. The workshops brought together provincial experts and guests to discuss and reflect on how to improve the integration of deaf people. The call to Parliament to initiate a debate on the revision of the Constitution with a view to recognizing sign language as the 5th national language is an essential step towards a more inclusive society that respects diversity.

The importance of this week goes far beyond mere celebration. It embodies a real commitment to equal rights and opportunities for all. By encouraging awareness, training and promotion of Congolese sign language, the DRC is paving the way towards a more inclusive future that respects the diversity of individuals who make up its society.
