Nigeria highlights its significant contribution to peacekeeping operations and commitment to international security within the framework of the United Nations. At the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, reaffirmed Nigeria’s demand for a seat on the UN Security Council. This demand is supported by the fact that Nigeria has participated in 41 peacekeeping missions and deployed over 200,000 troops to promote global peace.
Since 1960, Nigeria has contributed to 41 peacekeeping missions across the world, with over 200,000 Nigerian troops deployed in peacekeeping operations under the auspices of the United Nations. Minister Badaru advocated for reform of the UN Security Council to ensure representation of Africa with permanent seats, stressing that this would enhance global stability.
Highlighting Nigeria’s continued commitment to international peacekeeping and security, the Minister stressed the importance of strengthening Africa’s professional armies to combat terrorism. He also called for the operationalization of the African Standby Force and comprehensive strategies to combat transnational crime and illicit arms trafficking.
Nigeria is committed to combating transnational organized crime and stressed the need for comprehensive strategies to address emerging trends such as kidnapping for ransom and piracy. Minister Badaru also called on the international community to intensify efforts to control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in conflict zones, particularly in the Sahel region.
