Fight against gender-based violence in Kasaï Central: a call for action and solidarity

The phenomenon of gender-based violence in Kasai Central, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a worrying reality that requires sustained attention from society and the authorities. The alarming figures reported by the Women’s Network for the Protection of the Rights of Children and Women (REFEDEF) highlight the seriousness of the situation, with 107 cases recorded between April and June 2024.

This violence, which mainly affects women and girls in the province, reflects a society where discriminatory social norms and gender inequalities persist. The predominance of tradition, which grants disproportionate power to men, contributes to perpetuating this violence and restricting the rights of women and girls.

Faced with this alarming observation, it is imperative to put in place concrete and sustainable solutions to combat gender-based violence. The Women’s Voice and Leadership program, supported by The Carter Center of Canada, aims to strengthen collaboration between customary authorities and sector leaders to promote more equitable social norms and ensure the protection of the rights of women and girls.

The development of a proposal for a provincial edict on changing discriminatory norms demonstrates the desire to implement appropriate public policies to combat GBV and promote gender equality. However, it is essential that these initiatives be followed by concrete actions on the ground, involving the whole of society and institutions, to ensure real social transformation.

The end of the Carter Center’s support for the Women’s Voice and Leadership program underlines the importance of sustaining the actions undertaken and continued mobilization to combat gender-based violence. It is essential to maintain the momentum initiated and to put in place effective prevention and response mechanisms to protect the rights and dignity of women and girls in Kasaï Central.

Ultimately, the fight against gender-based violence is a constant struggle that requires constant vigilance and sustained commitment from all of society. It is time to come together to end these unacceptable practices and work together for a more just and equal future for all.
