The inspiring story of Fatshimetrie: Transforming plastic pollution into art with Pauline Wamenya Malkia

Fatshimetrie is a revolutionary project led by Pauline Wamenya Malkia, a Congolese artist and entrepreneur passionate about art and the environment. Her initiative aims to combat plastic pollution by transforming plastic bottles into beautiful sofas and other decorative objects. This approach combines creativity, ecology and social commitment for a positive impact on our planet.

The story of Fatshimetrie begins in 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, when Pauline observed with concern the deterioration of the environment in the Haut-Katanga region. Deeply affected by this reality, she decided to take concrete action by giving a second life to abandoned plastic bottles.

The process of creating sofas from recycled bottles involves five crucial steps. It all starts with the collection of bottles, followed by a careful study of their resistance. The cutting, assembly and finally the dressing give birth to unique pieces that combine aesthetics and environmental commitment. Each sofa thus represents a story, a symbol of the fight against plastic pollution.

Despite her unwavering determination, Pauline faces various challenges in carrying out her project. Collecting bottles in sometimes unsanitary conditions exposes health risks, while transporting materials poses logistical problems. In addition, the lack of funding limits the acquisition of essential equipment to develop her business.

The sofas created by Pauline generate great interest and demand, both for their aesthetic aspect and their ecological dimension. They are offered at prices ranging from 120 to 180 dollars, reflecting both the artistic value and the ecological commitment of these unique pieces.

Through Malki’art recycling SARLU, Pauline aims to train others in this innovative technique and to create a company with an international dimension. Her objective is twofold: to fight unemployment by offering training and employment opportunities, while actively contributing to the preservation of the environment in Africa and beyond.

To realize her projects and develop Fatshimetrie, Pauline needs support and funding. She is also committed to raising public awareness about the importance of recycling and responsible consumption, thus encouraging the adoption of ecological products in our daily lifestyles.

Fatshimetrie embodies a fine example of civic engagement and social innovation, a meaningful project that combines creativity, ecology and solidarity for a better world. Pauline Wamenya Malkia, through her inspiring initiative, reminds us of the importance of taking care of our planet and transforming environmental challenges into opportunities for positive change.
