Solidarity and unity for a strong Democratic Republic of Congo

Fatshimetrie, August 30, 2024 – The call for national cohesion launched by the Secretary General of the political party “Commitment to Citizenship and Development” (Ecidé) resonates as an urgent necessity at a time when the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing the persistent threat of balkanization. In a world where divergent interests and desires for division are becoming ever more pressing, it is crucial to bring together the country’s vital forces in order to preserve its integrity and sovereignty.

National cohesion thus appears to be the foundation on which the stability and future of the Congolese nation rests. Indeed, faced with the multiple challenges that stand in its way, whether it be the illegal occupation of certain territories by foreign rebel groups or internal tensions exacerbated by conflicting interests, only renewed unity will allow Congo to stand up and defend its interests vigorously on the international scene.

Calls for national cohesion should not be seen as empty speeches or political slogans. On the contrary, they must reflect a deep desire for reconciliation, dialogue and joint construction. It is necessary for the country’s various political and social actors to put aside their differences and particular interests to work together to develop a shared vision of the future of Congo.

The approach initiated by Ecidé and its leader, Martin Fayulu, who returned to the country for a national cohesion meeting, is to be welcomed and encouraged. It demonstrates a desire to overcome political divisions and place the nation’s best interests at the centre of concerns. It is essential that this movement finds echoes within the whole of Congolese society, that it mobilises the energies and skills of all to build together a common, prosperous and peaceful future.

Ultimately, national cohesion cannot be imposed from outside; it must be the fruit of a genuine collective awareness and a sincere commitment to building a common destiny. It is by looking at each other in the face, by recognizing the faults and mistakes of the past, that the Congo will be able to move forward on the path to reconciliation and unity. And it is by mobilizing together, in a spirit of solidarity and fraternity, that the Congolese people will be able to overcome the challenges that stand in their way and build a better future for future generations.
