Military drone incident on Rina mountain: concerns in the DRC

Fatshimetrie, August 13, 2024 – A disturbing incident occurred last Tuesday in the Buyi Sabuni region, in the Djugu territory, in Ituri Province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A military drone of the Ugandan army crashed on the Rina mountain, a few kilometers from the city of Bunia. This situation has raised questions and concerns within the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).

Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, spokesperson for the FARDC in Ituri, said that specialized teams have recovered the debris of the drone and are currently conducting an in-depth analysis to understand the circumstances of this incident. Several questions arise, including the type of drone involved and the reasons why it entered Congolese airspace without authorization.

It should be noted that this region has recently been the scene of attacks by the Zaire armed group against the Congolese armed forces. The presence of an unauthorized Ugandan drone in this area raises concerns about the coordination between the different military forces operating in the region.

Lieutenant Ngongo stressed that despite the collaboration between the FARDC and the Ugandan army to fight terrorist groups, it is essential that the Congolese authorities are informed in advance of any overflight by foreign drones. He recalled the example of MONUSCO, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the DRC, which systematically communicates with the FARDC for any drone activity in the region.

This situation underlines the importance of transparency and cooperation between the different military forces present in the Democratic Republic of Congo to ensure the security and stability of the Ituri region. It is crucial that the competent authorities conduct a thorough investigation into this incident to determine its causes and avoid any repetition in the future.

Fatshimetrie remains on alert in the face of these events and will continue to closely monitor any further developments concerning this drone crash in Congolese territory.
