Tragic road accident in Lagos: Call for responsible driving

The city of Lagos, Nigeria, has witnessed a tragic accident involving an articulated lorry and a minibus, leaving the local community in shock and raising questions about road safety in the area.

The accident occurred early in the morning, when an articulated lorry, registered MEK 945 XA, collided with a minibus with registration number AGL 287 YJ. The violent collision threw the minibus against the fence of a nearby shopping mall, causing considerable damage to property.

The Permanent Secretary of the responding agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the circumstances of the accident, noting that the lorry rammed the minibus from behind, leading to tragic consequences. The driver of the minibus, an adult male, unfortunately lost his life in the accident. His body was picked up by the agency’s emergency response team and handed over to the state’s environmental monitoring unit.

Investigations revealed that the accident was caused by the truck driver’s reckless driving and excessive speed. These factors highlight the importance of respecting road rules and remaining vigilant while driving.

The truck driver, who was also injured in the accident, was taken to hospital for medical treatment. The rescue agency successfully removed the truck from the mall fence and towed it to Dopemu Police Station. The road was reopened to traffic to allow normal road operations to resume.

This tragic accident is a reminder of the importance of road safety and educating drivers about the risks associated with reckless driving. It also highlights the need for stricter measures to ensure the safety of all road users.

In conclusion, this accident is a sad illustration of the tragic consequences of irresponsible road behaviour. It calls for collective reflection on road safety and for drivers to be better aware of the potential risks on the roads. Let us hope that measures will be taken to avoid such tragedies in the future.
