Kinshasa, August 9, 2024 (Fatshimetrie) – The renewed cooperation between the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and the National Office for the Identification of the Population (ONIP) in the Democratic Republic of Congo, within the framework of the issuance of national identity cards, was at the heart of a major meeting held in Kinshasa.
During this meeting, the Director General of ONIP, Richard Ilunga, expressed his gratitude to CENI for its commitment to supporting ONIP in this important national mission. He stressed the importance for the entire Congolese population to contribute and invest in obtaining these identity cards, thus marking a significant step towards adequate identification of the population.
Richard Ilunga praised CENI’s expertise in carrying out identification operations, stressing that CENI had already successfully carried out this task four times, identifying nearly 40 million people. He also stressed the need to complete this database by covering students to reach a higher percentage of the population, and mentioned the stratification identification method that will soon be unveiled to the nation.
For his part, the second vice-president of the CENI, Didi Manara, insisted on the development of a timetable of activities by experts from both institutions to ensure effective implementation of the agreed protocol.
This meeting marks the beginning of a new phase of collaboration between the CENI and ONIP, after a prolonged interruption, and demonstrates the commitment of both entities to work together to achieve this crucial objective of identifying the Congolese population.
This joint initiative between the CENI and ONIP is of crucial importance for the Democratic Republic of Congo, as obtaining reliable and complete national identity cards is essential for the establishment of a solid civil register, thus ensuring transparent and inclusive electoral processes as well as better management of public services.
In summary, the revival of collaboration between CENI and ONIP for the issuance of national identity cards in the Democratic Republic of Congo is an essential step that demonstrates the commitment of the Congolese authorities to precise and exhaustive identification of its population, thus strengthening the foundations of a democratic and transparent State.
