Fatshimetrie, August 2, 2024. A major milestone has been reached in the field of environmental communication in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Indeed, 21 journalists from the Kongo Central province participated in a training workshop focused on issues related to the hydroelectric dam and climate change. The objective of this initiative was to strengthen the capacities of local media for better coverage of environmental and climate issues in the province.
Organized by the NGO “Initiative pour le Développement Local” (I.D.E.L.), this workshop allowed journalists to take part in in-depth discussions on key themes such as the hydroelectric potential of Kongo Central, the different types of dams and the conclusions of the World Commission on Dams. Participants were also encouraged to integrate these crucial topics into their radio programs, thus helping to raise awareness among the local population about development projects initiated in the region.
Serge Ngimbi, coordinator of I.D.E.L., stressed the importance of this type of training in a province rich in natural resources but where environmental information is often neglected. He called on journalists to work in a network to ensure adequate media coverage of environmental and energy issues affecting Kongo Central.
The province of Kongo Central occupies a strategic position in terms of hydraulic, energy, mining and fossil resources, which makes it a major player in the country’s climate and economic issues. It is therefore essential that local media play an active role in disseminating accurate and objective information on these subjects that are crucial for the sustainable development of the region.
In conclusion, this training of journalists from Kongo Central marks a significant step forward in raising awareness among the population of the environmental and energy issues that shape the future of the province. Thanks to committed and conscientious journalism, these media professionals will be able to actively contribute to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development within their community.
Media coverage of these critical issues will play a crucial role in mobilizing the population around actions aimed at preserving the natural resources of Kongo Central and addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The journalists trained during this workshop are now better equipped to play a catalytic role in the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly development in their region.
