The horror of the Mobondo militia attacks in Kwamouth

In the heart of Kwamouth territory, in the Mai-Ndombe province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the violence of the Mobondo militia continues to sow terror and death. A new tragedy struck the region on Sunday, July 28, 2024, when a group of militia carried out a deadly attack on the Mpwebe farm, near the village of Camp Banku, on National Road number 17.

Five innocent lives were taken in this merciless attack, including three children, a woman and a young man. According to testimonies from civil society in Camp Banku, the militia entered the farm at first light, armed to the teeth. This is the third major offensive recorded during the month of July, after the bloody attacks of 12 and 14 July, which have already caused the loss of more than 100 lives, including nine members of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).

Faced with this escalation of violence and barbarity, the elected national deputy of Kwamouth, Guy Musomo, has launched an urgent appeal to the central government for an emergency intervention aimed at strengthening the presence of defense and law enforcement forces in the southern part of the Kwamouth territory. The objective is clear: to ensure the protection and security of local populations, constantly exposed to the exactions of the Mobondo militiamen.

This series of deadly attacks underlines once again the urgency of taking firm and concerted measures to put an end to the spiral of violence that is raging in the region. It is imperative to ensure the safety of civilians and restore a climate of peace and stability in this area already severely tested by armed conflicts and recurring violence.

Ultimately, the fight against armed groups and the protection of civilian populations must remain absolute priorities for the Congolese authorities. The attacks perpetrated by Mobondo militias in Kwamouth must no longer be tolerated, and concrete actions must be taken to put an end to this senseless violence, which only sows death and desolation. The future of the region and its inhabitants depends on the ability of the authorities to establish a climate of lasting security and justice, far from the ravages of armed violence.
