Fatshimetrie, July 28, 2024 – The involvement of women in promoting peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a topic of crucial importance, amplified during a workshop held in Kinshasa on the sidelines of the upcoming celebration of the International Day of African Women (IDAW) on July 31. Marcelline Lukala, a prominent member of the Congolese Diaspora Women’s Platform in Belgium, highlighted the significant impact of women in building a culture of peace and resilience in the face of conflict.
She highlights the empowerment of women and their integration into decision-making processes, emphasizing their ability to influence policies and practices to promote peace and equality. In post-conflict periods, women play a vital role in the social, family and economic reconstruction of torn societies. They fight for human rights, gender equality and the protection of girls, while investing in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence exacerbated in times of conflict.
In a context where open dialogue and reconciliation are essential pillars for resolving conflicts, Marcelline Lukala emphasizes the importance of generational thinking and the spirit of Ubuntu, advocating unity and solidarity for Congolese women of yesterday and today. She insists on the promotion of constructive African values to strengthen cultural identity and promote sustainable development on the continent.
The fight against oppressive cultural stereotypes towards African women is also highlighted, denouncing the psychological violence inflicted by harmful norms. The erroneous discourses and representations, relayed by the media and the cosmetics industry, contribute to the devaluation of black women and expose them to harmful consequences on their health and well-being.
In conclusion, it is crucial to recognize the value and positive impact of women in building a peaceful and inclusive society. Their central role in promoting peace, gender equality and social justice cannot be underestimated. It is up to everyone to support and encourage women’s commitment for a more just, equitable and harmonious future.
